The Chinese Itoigawa juniper (Juniperus chinensis Shimpaku Itoigawa) is a highly sought-after species among bonsai lovers due to its elegant appearance, fine leaves and its suitability for bonsai design. This variety of Chinese juniper, which comes from the Itoigawa region of Japan, has unique properties that are particularly valued in the art of bonsai. Older bonsai of this juniper variety are often sold for several thousand euros, making them one of the most expensive bonsai types in the world.

Appearance

Juniperus Chinensis Itoigawa features a compact, dense habit with delicate, needle-like leaves that range in color from bright green to rich emerald, especially when well cared for. Its foliage is finer and softer compared to other Chinese juniper varieties. The plant reaches a maximum height of approximately 1 meter.

Bark and trunk

As the Juniperus Chinensis Shimpaku Itoigawa matures, the bark turns reddish-brown, giving the plant a very attractive appearance. The trunk of this juniper variety often features twisted, gnarled shapes that convey a sense of age and character that adds to its overall charm as a bonsai specimen.
