Description

Blaukorn 12-8-16 +3 is a classic mineral NPK fertilizer widely used in horticulture, nurseries, ornamental plant production, and container cultivation. The numbers 12-8-16 represent the percentage of the primary nutrients nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P₂O₅), and potassium (K₂O). In addition, the fertilizer contains 3% magnesium oxide (MgO), sulfur, and trace elements such as iron, zinc, and boron. It is designed as a balanced, fast-acting fertilizer that supports healthy vegetative growth, root development, and strong overall plant vigor.

The nitrogen content of 12% promotes shoot growth, green foliage, and general plant vitality. Part of the nitrogen is present in nitrate form for rapid uptake, while the ammonium fraction provides a more sustained feeding effect. The phosphorus content of 8% supports root development, flowering, and energy transfer within the plant. Potassium is relatively high at 16%, making the fertilizer particularly suitable for plants with increased potassium demand, including flowering plants, fruiting plants, bonsai, conifers, balcony plants, and many ornamental species. Potassium improves water regulation, strengthens plant tissue, and increases resistance to drought and environmental stress.

One of the advantages of Blaukorn fertilizer is that every granule contains the full nutrient composition. This ensures even nutrient distribution when applied correctly. The fertilizer is also low in chloride because the potassium source is mainly potassium sulfate rather than potassium chloride. This makes it safer for chloride-sensitive plants and particularly useful in horticulture and container growing. Magnesium and sulfur further improve chlorophyll production and plant metabolism, while trace elements help prevent micronutrient deficiencies.

For potted plants, Blaukorn should be used carefully because mineral fertilizers are concentrated and fast acting. Excessive application may lead to root damage, salt accumulation, or fertilizer burn, especially in small containers. In general, lower doses applied more frequently are safer than large single applications.

For medium-sized potted plants, a common dosage is approximately 1 to 3 grams of fertilizer per liter of substrate. As a practical guideline, this corresponds roughly to:

  • Small pots (1–2 liters): 2–4 grams
  • Medium pots (3–5 liters): 5–10 grams
  • Large containers (10 liters and above): 10–20 grams

The granules should be spread evenly over the soil surface and lightly worked into the top layer if possible. After application, the plants should always be watered thoroughly to dissolve the nutrients and reduce the risk of root burn.

During the active growing season, fertilization is usually repeated every four to six weeks. Fast-growing species, flowering plants, and nutrient-demanding container plants may require more regular feeding, while slow-growing plants such as bonsai or Mediterranean species often benefit from lighter applications. In winter or during dormancy, fertilization should be greatly reduced or stopped entirely.

For sensitive plants or bonsai cultivation, many growers prefer using only half the standard dosage. Community discussions among gardeners frequently emphasize that concentrated mineral fertilizers should be applied conservatively in containers because over fertilization occurs more easily in confined root systems.

Blaukorn 12-8-16 +3 is particularly suitable for vigorous ornamental plants, balcony flowers, citrus trees, conifers, and many outdoor container plants that require reliable nutrient availability. When used correctly, it promotes strong growth, healthy leaf color, compact structure, and improved stress resistance. However, because it is a mineral fertilizer with immediate nutrient availability, careful dosing and regular watering are essential for maintaining healthy potted plants.
